Weight-Loss Treatments
To be a candidate for New Reflections surgery, you must be:
- 100 pounds or more overweight
- Unable to lose weight by diet and exercise
- Between the ages of 18 and 65
(younger if medical conditions dictate)
There are many different weight-loss surgeries being performed today. However, we generally perform three types of procedures:
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (open and laparoscopic)
The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is the most common weight-loss surgery we perform. It restricts food intake by shrinking the stomach capacity and causes slightly less absorption of food because a portion of the stomach and small intestine are bypassed.
Vertical Ring Gastroplasty
The Vertical Ring Gastroplasty is a weight-loss surgery that is commonly performed in the United States.
It restricts food intake by shrinking the stomach capacity and limiting the rate that food can enter the stomach. Unlike the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, the small intestine is not rerouted in this procedure.
LAP-BAND
The LAP-Band is the latest New Reflections weight-loss treatment.
The surgery restricts food intake by shrinking the stomach capacity. This is typically a same day or overnight-stay laparoscopic procedure that doesn't involve cutting, removing or rearranging the stomach or small intestine.
A New Reflections physician can usually adjust the rate of weight-loss during a thirty-minute visit following the surgery; it's not necessary to go to the operating room or spend a night in the hospital for the adjustment.
Although the LAP-Band procedure is simpler than traditional gastric bypass surgeries, most patients do not lose as much weight afterwards. Also, the rate of weight-loss is slower than with the Roux-en-Y procedure.
